Simpler software in the AI age

Rubin Basha

I have always cared about making software simpler, and the rush around AI development makes me think this matters even more now. It is easy to add more when AI can build it, but somebody still has to ask whether it belongs in the product. Even if we had the knowledge of all the code developed in the world, why would we need to preoptimise for every edge case that might make sense in a theoretical environment? If those scenarios do not reflect the circumstances of the business, we can end up solving theoretical problems while making the actual software harder to understand. That is where I think our judgement as software builders matters, steering AI towards simplicity and deciding how much complexity is justified. That requires discipline, and being a father influences how I think about the rules we choose. A child learning to play a game needs enough rules to understand the boundaries and enjoy playing, but too many rules and the fun is gone. I think our engineering practices should work in that same way. Architecture, testing and security should give us confidence to build, while keeping the software understandable and suited to the business. That is how I think about bringing quality to the AI age at BasalBit, helping companies use more AI without making things more complicated than they need to be.

If you are building something

A new app, a prototype that needs to become a real product, or a team that needs senior hands. Tell me the problem. I will tell you honestly whether we are a fit.
